Search for Seventh Victim after Gas Rig Helicopter Crashes in Morecambe Bay

RESCUERS were today searching for a seventh victim of a helicopter crash in Morecambe Bay.

The bodies of six men have been brought ashore after the Eurocopter AS365N, carrying five gas rig workers and two crew, ditched about 24 miles off the coast at 6.35pm last night.

A major search involving two RAF helicopters and lifeboats was launched, and five bodies were recovered by 9.30pm. Another body was found later.

The aircraft, which took off from Blackpool airport, was collecting Centrica workers from a gas field in the bay. At a press conference at Blackpool airport, Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell of Lancashire Constabulary, said: "The

Coastguard are co-ordinating a massive search. The helicopter had been travelling around various rigs in Morecambe Bay.

"I am sad to say we have recovered six bodies and the search continues for the outstanding person."

Mr Gradwell said conditions at sea were very cold, but not foggy. …
