Families made the most of the New Year Bank Holiday as they enjoyed a variety of fun events throughout the region.

Scores of swimmers took to the icy waters of the North Sea yesterday for the annual dip.

More than 40 members of the Panama Swimming Club plunged into the freezing water at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, just before 11am.

It's a tradition that's been going for 100 years and onlookers gathered on the beach near the Rendezvous Cafe to watch the event.

Hannah Barnes, 29, of Fenham, Newcastle, her sister Theresa Barnes, 32, and their mum Penny Henry, 55, said they all enjoyed the swim.

Hannah said: "It was great to do the dip together. The sea was cold, but the sun was out so it wasn't too bad. We had a lot of fun."

Mother-of-two Alison Tipple, 34, a doctor of Whitley Bay, added: "It was absolutely fantastic. I'd recommend it to anyone."

A Panama Swimming Club spokeswoman said the event had been one of the best attended for several years. …
