POLICE were today trying to determine the breed of a dog that killed a five-year-old girl.

Ellie Lawrenson was staying at her grandmother's house in St Helens, Merseyside, when she was attacked by the pit bull terrier-style dog yesterday.

She died of severe head and neck injuries and her grandmother, Jackie Simpson, 46, suffered arm injuries when she intervened.

Police and St Helens council are trying to discover whether the animal was a pure-breed pitbull, which could make its owner liable to prosecution under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The adult dog, called Reuben, belonged to Ellie's uncle, Kiel Simpson, who lives at the house. It was shot at the scene by police marksmen and a post-mortem examination was taking place today.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The investigation is continuing and determining the precise breed of the dog is a priority."

Police also hope to obtain more details from Ellie's grieving family. …
