Stokesley kick off the New Year aiming at the top six as they entertain THORNABY, looking to complete a second division derby double.

The league new boys moved up into eighth place with a gritty 2-0 Boxing Day home victory over promotion chasing Norton, to make it three wins in a row.

But Thornaby will travel in high spirits, after they also claimed a Christmas cracker of a 2-0 win over Norton.

"We know it will be a battle because Thornaby have got some good, strong players and they are on a bit of a run," said Stokesley boss Ted Watts.

"We did well against Norton. We got two good goals and then defended very well.

"It was a good performance and has put us in a good position.

"There's a long way to go but we are only nine points off third place so we need to keep working and keep winning.

"Thornaby will be a difficult game because they will really graft, so we must match that. But if we play the way we have been, then we can win it," he added.

Thornaby go to Broughton Road, heartened by some progress on their ground.

Power supplies have been restored, they have sealed a new partnership with Thornaby council and a meeting with developers hoping to transform the site proved fruitful.

Things have perked up on the pitch too with the win at Norton and a Boxing Day 2-2 draw at Penrith which lifted them well away from the drop zone, and with games in hand, a chance of moving into mid-table.

"The lads I've got here have shown real spirit and real commitment," said boss Alan Robinson.

"There's no money here and there has been a lot of uncertainty but they have knuckled down and done a fantastic job for me," Robinson added.

Thornaby have been rocked by the news that in-form schemer Gareth Waite is out for six weeks after a festive dash to hospital with a ruptured appendix. …
