Row over plan to fell 24 trees

Plans to chop down trees in a leafy suburb of Tyneside have angered residents.

Backed by local councillors, they are now battling to save the trees from the axe.

In tree-lined Wingrove Road, Newcastle, the city council wants to fell 24 whitebeams.

Officials say the trees are diseased and a potential danger to people and property, but they will be replaced.

Wingrove councillor Nigel Todd says the fate of cherry trees on the road is also in the balance.

He said: "There's been some concern expressed by residents about the loss of the trees and the prospect of Wingrove Road losing a good deal of its attractive greenery. We're wondering if the replacement of the trees could be phased. This would, at least, retain some of the green foliage that makes Wingrove Road such a pleasant area in the spring and summer."

Coun Todd says officers have now agreed no trees will be felled until residents have had a chance to put their views at the next meeting of the Wingrove ward committee later this month. …
