If playing for United was a historic moment for Eddie Edgar, then having Pele as a team-mate must rank as the ultimate in bragging rights.

Edgar actually signed for the New York Cosmos when pro football was booming in America, and was welcomed by no less than the finest soccer player ever to walk planet football.

"Can you imagine that?" roared Eddie, impressed to this very day.

"I was 21 years of age and a total unknown, but when I walked into the Cosmos dressing-room Pele came over, hand outstretched, and introduced himself as though I wouldn't know who he was.

"He was 36 years old but still a class act. He was an absolute gentleman, the ultimate pro and perfect example for young players."

Edgar had signed from Hartlepool on loan for a short period to act as their cover keeper.

"The trouble was in those days all clubs had to include seven Americans in their side, and we had a terrific Yank in goal called Shep Messing.

"He was a legend ( the first Playgirl nude centrefold, whose girlfriend was a New York model.

"Messing was a real extrovert. He was in the film Escape To Victory with Pele, Bobby Moore and Ossie Ardiles when a football match was staged involving some prisoners of war. …
