Rally Ho Claire

Article excerpt

Rally rookie Claire Craven went home with a trophy after her very first event - so now she's planning some more outings!

Claire, from Marske, swapped the surroundings of Loftus Job Centre, where she works during the week, to make her rally debut alongside dad Dave - an experienced driver - in the Specsavers Christmas Stages at Croft.

And the pair took their Mitsubishi Evo 6 to a highly creditable fifth place overall on her first attempt at the sport.

They also finished second in class, to earn 21-year-old Teesside University graduate Claire her first piece of silverware at her first attempt.

"It was a fun event for us," reported Dave, from Guisborough, "with nothing being taken too seriously and that resulted in a brilliant day's sport for us both.

"Claire had a good day which is what it was all about and went home with a trophy for second in class as a memento.

"The only problem now is that she wants to do it again!

"I think she needs some training before contesting our usual forest events, but maybe another single venue event could be on the cards.

"That's if she is content to co-drive as there has been several mentions of her driving on an event! It could be an interesting year."

The pair were pipped for fourth place in the event by former double winner Tony Bardy and co-driver Reg Smith (Nissan Sunny GTi-R).

They opted to take it easy on the final test due to a lack of suitable tyres for the rain-drenched surface and ended the day just a second adrift of Bardy and Smith.

David Bogie and Davie Patterson (Metro 6R4) took victory after finishing almost a minute ahead of North Yorkshire rallycrossers Kevin Procter and Dave Bellerby (Subaru Impreza) with Castleton's British Championship runner-up Ryan Champion and co-driver Carol Rossendale (Mitsubishi Evo 8) third.

Meanwhile Bardy is back at Croft this Sunday when he attempts to win Darlington DMC's Jack Frost Stages Rally for the fourth year running. …
