Appeal to Solve Tribute Mystery

JOURNAL readers are being asked to help solve the mystery of a war memorial which has been found in a council depot.

The hope is that people may recognise the First World War solid marble memorial or some of the names inscribed on the one metre-wide slab.

It also has an addition at the bottom, remembering Sgt Flight Engineer John A Wilson, who died in the Second World War.

None of the staff at the Gateshead Council depot remember it being brought to the site so it is believed to have been there for some time.

Local studies librarians and the North East War Memorials Project can throw no light on its origins either, although it is thought that it may have come from the Pelaw or Felling area.

Champion for historic environments at Gateshead Council Linda Green said: "The council is committed to the preservation of local history, and war memorials are an important record of the sacrifices made by local people. …
