If You Go; Explore 'Temples and Tombs' of Egypt Major Exhibit Opens Today at the Cummer

Article excerpt

So, just how big a deal is the new "Temples and Tombs: Treasures of Egyptian Art from the British Museum" exhibit that opens today at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens?

-- The Riverside Avenue museum built a new 4,800-square-foot Minerva and Raymond K. Mason Gallery to house the exhibition, which will be on display through Sunday, March 18.

-- The exhibition includes 85 objects, some of which are more than 4,000 years old. They span four dynasties of ancient Egypt. The items are on loan from the prestigious British Museum.

-- The new gallery at the Cummer has been laid out to mimic ancient Egyptian tombs. It includes four distinctive areas: "The King and the Temple," "Objects from the Lives of Artists and Nobles," "Statues of Egyptians from Temples and Tombs" and "The Tomb, Death and the Afterlife."

-- The exhibit itself does not include a mummy, but the museum borrowed one from the College of Holy Cross in Massachusetts. The mummy will be on display in a nearby gallery.

-- More than 40,000 people saw the exhibit during a three-month run at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
