Dallas Brass to Perform at Bartram Trail Auditorium Wednesday

Bartram Trail band students and teachers are expecting some special guests on campus next week, and they're trumpeting an invitation for everyone to take note of their special performance.

The internationally recognized brass ensemble Dallas Brass will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bartram Trail High School Auditorium. Before the concert, the group will hold several educational clinics for Bartram Trail's band students and students from other local schools.

Founded in Dallas in 1983, Dallas Brass has performed with several well-known orchestras, including the Cincinnati Pops and the New York Pops. Although the group has played in Carnegie Hall and toured overseas, it dedicates much of its schedule to performing at public schools and working with student musicians.

Bartram Trail High School Band Director Jason Duckett said this week that the opportunity for his students to learn from and play with the world-famous ensemble was extraordinary.

"This is a chance for these [students] to be in the same room and learn from people who are at the top of their field," Duckett said. "For the rest of their lives, they'll be able to look back and say, 'I played with those guys.' "

The group's full-day residency begins with clinics on becoming better musicians, including discussions on the importance of and how to practice. The students will have an opportunity to question the performers on a variety of topics, and to perform with them on several musical selections as part of the clinics.

Later, Dallas Brass performers will rehearse with and coach the student musicians in preparation for the evening concert when the Bartram Trail Wind Symphony will accompany the group on its concert finale.

Duckett says that while having his students learn from professional musicians is invaluable, the most important part of Dallas Brass's message is its focus on "music for life. …
