We've always known that Nicky Butt has loads of ability, but I think it is only now that the Geordie public are beginning to see it.

Butt won the lot at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson and, alongside Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs, learned everything a modern-day midfielder should.

I know Newcastle fans don't want to hear me or anybody else harping on about Man U, but I think we are benefiting from his education now.

It was obvious that something wasn't quite right at the start of his time with the Toon but perhaps he has realised that after Newcastle it doesn't really get much bigger.

Whatever has happened, he is now playing some great football and you can see why he was voted one of the players of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea.

At Spurs on Sunday he crawled off his sick bed and put in a superb performance, capped off by scoring the winner.

He could have lost the plot in the second half and went chasing after Pascal Chimbonda, who slapped him in the face. …
