Fear turned to elation for an eyewitness during the dramatic cliff rescue.

Paul Atkinson played a vital role in ensuring the emergency services could find and rescue the four girls trapped on the cliff near Skinningrove.

Mr Atkinson, 38, of Carlin How, had gone fishing on Sunday when he spotted the girls struggling on the cliff.

He said: "It was about 4.30pm when I noticed some kids halfway up the cliff. There is a path which leads down, but it looked like they'd lost their direction."

Not knowing whether the girls were in trouble, but concerned by the failing light, he shouted up to them.

Mr Atkinson, who is married to Sally and dad to Jack, five, and Bobby, four, said: "One of the girls had started to climb away, I think to get help, but she had got herself on a dangerous part of the cliff. …
