I Won't Make Panic Buys

Article excerpt

Byline: By Alan Oliver

Glenn Roeder insists he will not make any panic buys after Newcastle United were humiliated in front of the whole nation in last night's FA Cup drubbing by Birmingham at St James' Park.

However, Roeder was still at his desk at the crack of dawn in his bid to try to get some much-needed defenders into the club.

But it is unlikely that he will be able to pull off any signings before his former club West Ham come to St James' Park on Saturday.

Roeder was down but far from out when I spoke to him today and he said: "Last night will not affect my thinking on what players I may or may not want to sign.

"I will not be making any panic buys.

"In fact, my targets are exactly the same today as they were before last night's game. I am not a lemming about to run off the end of the cliff.

"I could easily go out and buy a couple of central defenders who are the wrong side of 30, but that's the road to nowhere.

"And if the truth was told there are not many good 30-year-olds out there.

"January is an awful time to be trying to buy players, with clubs, for a vast number of reasons, not wanting to get rid of their players."

A lot of names have been bandied around in recent weeks as United targets, and all but a couple have been wrong.

But if Roeder manages to land some of the names I am hearing, then the United supporters will be happy.

But what will not make the fans happy is that last night's defeat also has repercussions for United's Premiership campaign. For Steven Taylor, sent off in the 58th minute for a professional foul, will get a one-match ban which rules him out of the West Ham game.

And Nobby Solano will now miss the league game with his previous club Aston Villa at St James' Park a week on Wednesday for reaching five bookings. …
