New Prescott Gaffe as He Reveals His Fear of Gay Sailors

IT CASTS a whole new light on the prickly relationship between John Prescott and Peter Mandelson. The famously libidinous Deputy Prime Minister, who compared Mandelson unfavourably to a Chinese Mitten crab, has revealed he once feared bedding down with gay sailors during his days as a ship steward.

In a forthcoming interview for a Radio 4 show called Prescott At Your Service, Prezza recalls asking for his lodgings to be changed because of his concern over being billeted with "ten gay guys in a room" when on board the RMS Rangitata in 1957.

Relates Prescott: "The thing that struck me most was that when I joined it they didn't sail out the North, they sailed out the South and there were a lot of gay guys on board and I was quite amazed at this."

Prezza's syntax is never easy to follow but the Hull MP appears to be implying most gay sailors hailed from the south of England.

He adds: "And I remember saying, spending three months on a voyage and there were ten gay guys in a room and I said, 'I'm not staying in a room like this. …
