A Teesside couple told Home Secretary John Reid of their fight against thugs.

Mr Reid visited Ron and Vivien Carter-Bonsteel at their Thorntree home yesterday as he announced Middlesbrough would receive extra Government money to stamp out yobbish behaviour.

Middlesbrough is one of 40 "Respect" zones across the country which will share pounds 6m of funding.

Ron and Vivien have suffered for many years through loutish behaviour but have always stood up to the problem, and Mr Reid was keen to meet the couple.

Ron said: "We talked about what we are doing and told him of the problems we had. He was very interested and seemed keen to help communities like this.

"We had about 20 to 25 minutes with him. He was really nice and made you feel at ease. We gave him the negatives about the estate but we also gave him the positives which I thought was important."

The couple also told Mr Reid about the Haven Project they are involved in - a new council scheme which will provide a support network for victims of anti-social behaviour. …
