Clay High Kicker Lifts South Team; He Hits Game-Winning Kick in Shrine Bowl

In the ceremonies prior to Saturday's 18th annual Shrine Bowl kickoff, the emcee reminded fans that proceeds would go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the game was being held "so that strong legs can run so that weak legs may walk."

But Clay High's Eric Buchanan doesn't do much running on the football field, so he helped the Shriners' cause by letting his strong legs do what they do best.

With six seconds remaining in a 7-all tie game, it was Buchanan's right leg that became the most important appendage in the Orange Park stadium as he lined up for a 23-yard field goal for the South team.

And while a 23-yarder might not seem like a tough test for most kickers, this wasn't quite your run-of-the-mill field goal attempt.

For one thing, shifting winds had been gusting in all day from the north end zone that Buchanan was staring into, and the chill in the air had become downright cold as the sun began to settle behind the bleachers, turning hard pigskin even harder. …
