North Joy after Road Trip Ends in Victory

Article excerpt

With no wins from three starts in the Inter County Championship, Northumberland travelled to Sheffield needing a win against opponents who similarly had not won this season. North did not disappoint, securing a 9-6 victory.

With several ladies missing, North were pleased to be able to call upon the experience of Debbie Porter to bolster their squad, and for the first time this season, all six men were available for the same match.

North started well, with Sarah Renton producing her regulation two- set win, and Adam Tingle, despite conceding the second set, rallying effectively throughout to win the decider comfortably at 21-11.

Despite a typical three-set effort from Andy Hogg, that was the limit of North's success in the singles, so it was 2-2 and all to play for.

So it was 4-4, the men buoyant and the ladies looking to improve in the reverse doubles.

The men continued their good form and delivered two wins for North to lead 6-4. Not to be outdone, the ladies came back strongly, with Sarah Renton and Katherine Gray recovering from the loss of their opening set to win in three and the scratch pairing of Alison Thompson and Debbie Porter taking the first set against Yorkshire's top string before being just edged out in the second 21-16.

Try as they might, they couldn't get ahead in the decider and went down 21-14.

An excellent effort at just the right time to give North the momentum going into the mixed, the score 7-5 to North; one mixed for victory and all three for a 3-0 points win. …
