Asbestos Widow in Cash Fight

A Teesside widow whose husband died from asbestos related cancer has launched a legal battle for compensation.

Derek Scott, 77, died from lung cancer in 2005 after developing the disease as a result of his work, according to a writ issued in London's High Court.

The writ, made publicly available, says Mr Scott was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres when he worked for ICI at its factory in Billingham between 1951 and 1983. His widow Margaret Scott, of Billingham, is now claiming damages from ICI.

The writ claims Mr Scott worked as an electrician's mate in a building with four boilers, where laggers were applying and cutting asbestos-based insulation. It says the men would often gather up asbestos material like snowballs and throw them at each other, with Mr Scott having to sweep up copious amounts of debris and dust.

He is also said to have worked on construction in other areas, including the boiler house, ammonia house and powder house. …
