The spirit of Bob Marley will be alive and well on Tyneside tonight as some of the world's leading dub and reggae stars descend on Newcastle University's union rooms in celebration of the reggae legend's birthday.

After the success of November's Boss Sounds Festival, which saw reggae superstars Jimmy Cliff and Lee 'Scratch' Perry (among many others) grace the North-East, Newcastle will once again throb to the chilled out sounds of Jamaica ( courtesy, this time, of the Bob Marley's Earthday Celebration.

Spread across three floors, there will be a diverse blend of music, ranging from mellowed reggae to frantic jungle music.

Headlining room one is the Trenchtown Experience, a collaboration consisting of the cream of London's reggae session artists with female trio The I-Threes on backing vocals, mirroring the exact line up Marley himself used in the late 70s with the Wailers.

Accompanying them in their tribute are Love Grocer, a London dub outfit who mix rib-rattling baselines with crisp brass. …
