VW Goes Chunky with a Rival for Macho Title

A new 4x4 based on the Volkswagen Golf is about to tee off although it will be some time before it reaches UK showrooms. The chunky newcomer is on show at the Los Angeles Motor Show and is set to make its European debut at next spring's auto show in Geneva.

It will then make the rounds of the world's many other motor shows before finally taking to the roads early in 2008.

Think of the newcomer as a shrunken Volkswagen Touareg and you will not be too wide of the mark.

A rival for the likes of the Nissan X-Trail, it is also expected to come with an entry-level front wheel drive-only version too.

However, the bulk of sales are likely to be the models equipped with VW's 4MOTION system which sends drive to all four wheels on demand. Called the Tiguan, the newcomer is like a Golf on steroids, with bulges in all the right places to endow it with a purposeful stance.

It is just under 14ft long and has 19-inch diameter wheels housed within heavily blistered wheel arches. …
