Villa Gunned Down by Ole

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepped off the bench to propel Manchester United into the fourth round of the FA Cup, writes Ken Gaunt.

The Norwegian striker has a habit of scoring crucial goals and this match was no exception. He scored the winner in stoppage time, the striker's effort squirming under the body of goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly.

But it was fellow Scandanavian frontman Henrik Larsson, on loan from Helsingborg, who took the spotlight by marking his debut for the Red Devils with the opening goal.

Swedish striker Larsson, earned a tribute from Villa boss Martin O'Neill after the game.

O'Neill, who managed Larsson during his glory years at Celtic, was in a state of disbelief, following his Villa's loss to such a late goal. But he was still generous in his praise of Larsson, now 35.

"He is always capable of scoring a goal like that," said the Villa boss. "People said he would only score goals in Scotland and I never thought for one minute he wouldn't score in any league he chose. He has gone on to show that."

Villa seemed to have secured a replay when substitute Milan Baros equalised but Solskjaer had the last word.

Larsson was quickly in the action and delivered a good ball into the area after two minutes that was headed clear by Liam Ridgewell.

Larsson then knocked the ball back to Rooney 25 yards out in the 12th minute, only for his effort to clear the bar.

Larsson was certainly looking sharp at that stage and sent a header into the arms of goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly in the 14th minute.

Goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly came to Villa's rescue after 30 minutes when he did well to get a hand to Rooney's effort following some trickery from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Larsson marked his arrival at Old Trafford in the 55th minute. He showed good composure after being picked out by Rooney in the area to rattle a shot beyond Kiraly. …
