High winds and severe rain have played their part in spoiling anglers' sport this past week, although the continuing mildness has resulted in more bankside activity than normal for December.

Floodwater put the Tyne out of sorts, but the Wear near Durham was still producing chub and dace earlier this week from the free stretch near the County Hotel.

At the Angel, Bassett's Lake is still producing weights to 6lb and regulars are still netting in excess of 20 fish in a day regardless of bad weather, while on Bowes, carp have now shoaled up and location is important.

Lookout has produced some excellent catches including a ghost carp of 8lb 4oz and a tench of 6lb plus a 2lb crucian with ledgering being the most productive style with best hook baits being maggot, sweetcorn, expander pellet, and worm.

Quality perch are still coming from Crofton Lake, where Mike Shaw had two fish both around the 1lb 8oz mark and other anglers have reported 2lb plus fish coming from the same venue recently. Sunday saw the final match in this year's North East Winter League fished on the River Tees at Bowesfield.

Neil Milstead took the individual honours with 5 bream for 14lb 14oz, ahead of Tony Leeming with 9lb 5oz. Barry Smith was third with 8lb 10oz.

Daiwa Cleveland Angling Centre were top team on the day and underlined their superiority as overall league winners, taking the series from Shimano Quaker in second and Newman Scotts in third.

Saturday's open match on the Angel saw outstanding weights for December with Dave Hudson (see page 57) claiming top spot from peg three with 47lb 13oz, ahead of Alan Hepple with 16lb in second and John Mayall in third with 11lb 13oz. …
