Midgley Voices Concern over Thunder Delay

Gateshead Thunder are set to finally announce a decision on their new coach at a board meeting tomorrow.

The Tynesiders are the only one of rugby league's 34 professional clubs still to sign or re-sign a player for the 2007 season, which begins in February. Supporters, along with former chairman Bill Midgley, the club's only North-East-based director, have become increasingly concerned at the inactivity.

Midgley said: "I share the supporters' concerns about the time it's taken to replace Dean Thomas as head coach. We've already lost some key players and others could follow."

"We should have had a coach in place by now and we must not go back to the days when the club merely existed as we want to take the club forward." Two of Gateshead's four-strong board are based in Yorkshire, with the other, chief shareholder Neil McPherson, a London-based businessman.

McPherson has been holding talks with the Jersey-based Essential Group with a view to significant backing and a possible stake in the club. …
