Council planners look set to re-affirm their support for a 250-job business village in the Northumberland countryside ( six months after the scheme was rejected by the Government.

Partners Bellway Homes and Rivergreen Developments are making a renewed bid to re-develop the derelict St Mary's Hospital near Stannington, which closed 10 years ago.

In May, Communities and Local Government Secretary Ruth Kelly rejected the companies' previous joint application to create a multi-million pound business and housing complex following a public inquiry.

She ruled it was 'inappropriate development in the green belt', dashing hopes that new life would finally be breathed into the redundant site, next to the 34-home hamlet of St Mary's.

Next week, Castle Morpeth Council's development control committee will be recommended by officers to give their backing to the revised bid, which is almost certain to be scrutinised by the Government. …
