The UK's passion for pets is bringing overseas success to a County Durham company.

Andy Milford, managing director of Mainline Pet Supplies, has expanded the business steadily since taking it over three years ago.

And, with turnover approaching pounds 1m, he now plans to import direct from India and China and expand its client base nationwide.

The business started in one unit on the Seaham Grange Industrial Estate but has doubled its space to 6,000 sq ft and now has a workforce of six.

Its growing range of more than 2,000 products ( from bedding and food to toys and accessories ( is in demand from shops across the region.

Mr Milford said: "The British love their pets and reptiles are currently the growth area.

"The market is changing fast as smaller independent pet shops are having to adapt to compete with the major chains.

"I'm confident that the potential is there for us to do very well and the personal service we provide is helping to win us customers. …
