Marge Bolton, 64, a Learning Support Officer from Alnwick, Northumberland, said: "I've been travelling on the trains for 21 years and I live in Alnwick but work in Newcastle.

"I use the East Coast line every day and the number of people travelling on it has increased.

"Everyone needs to get to work on time so reliability is essential. But I'm one of these people who are 'better the devil you know.'

"Are we going to get any better than what we have already got? The Government is wanting to get us off the roads so we need as many trains as possible."

Sue Duffy, Hospital Technician, 45, from South Shields said: "I have never known the train to Edinburgh to be late before and I use it quite a lot.

"A single to Edinburgh has only cost me pounds 9.50 if I buy it in advance, so I am quite happy with the service at the moment. …
