Housebuilder George Wimpey has said a record number of completions in the UK had helped it offset poor trading conditions in the United States.

The group, which operates as Morrison Homes in the US, said it remained on course to post pre-tax profits in line with market expectations.

Looking ahead, Wimpey said the outlook for the UK market appeared stable, but that it remained difficult to predict the outcome for the US.

N-power blow

BRITISH Energy has warned of fresh disappointment in its battle to restore two of its nuclear power stations to working order.

The UK's biggest power supplier said it was likely that units at Hunterston B and Hinkley Point B would not be back online until the end of March.

That date represents the costliest of three scenarios outlined by British Energy in November following the emergence of cracked boiler pipes.
