Ernie Els is relishing the opportunity to wrest the Commercialbank Qatar Masters trophy back from Henrik Stenson when the tournament gets under way tomorrow.

The South African edged the Swede to win at the Doha Golf Club in 2005 but last year was unable to deny Stenson victory, failing to muster a decent challenge and eventually finishing 13th.

But fresh from success in his homeland where he won the South African Open in December, Els is desperate to get out on to the golf course and start the year as well as he ended the last.

"Obviously I'm glad to be back and I am anxious to start on Thursday," he said. "It's the first event of the new year and I want to start nicely, hit the ball well and get some birdies."

By his own standards, Els endured a disappointing year in 2006. …
