Chamber boss issues rallying call to region

North-East Chamber of Commerce president Maggie Pavlou last night urged more businesses and public bodies to back the Go For Jobs campaign, after it was honoured by Britain's industrial leaders.

Mrs Pavlou re-stated the importance of improving the region's transport links after NECC was named Britain's best campaigning chamber for its work on Go For Jobs, run jointly with The Journal and our sister paper on Teesside, the Evening Gazette.

The fight to secure funding from the Government for the region's roads will step up ahead of next summer's Comprehensive Spending Review, which will set departments' funding levels for three years.

Go For Jobs leaders are anxious to see money committed for upgrades to the A1 in particular. The campaign will also aim to help businesses take action to ease congestion at the region's pinch-points.
