With Birtley Town only managing to draw at Ryhope CW, it meant they relinquished their lead in the table.

Cumbrian side Whitehaven left Hartlepool with all three points and now sit in pole position with a single point advantage having played a game more than Birtley.

Lowly Ryhope performed extremely well against Birtley, but it was their goalkeeper Michael Burlison who ended up as their hero.

The Ryhope keeper kept his side in the game with a penalty save from Tony Thirkell with just 10 minutes remaining.

Hartlepool will regard themselves unlucky against Whitehaven. They went into a two-goal lead thanks to Dean Hustler who scored in the 21st and 32nd minutes.

A penalty appeal went against Hartlepool on 36 minutes and Jonathan Wright reduced the arrears. After the break Craig Robson and Wright once more hit the net leaving Hartlepool narrow 3-2 losers.

Cleadon lost ground on the leaders when they could only draw with Teesside Athletic. …
