Tempted by the wonderful springlike weather, I ventured into Chandler's garden centre in Gosforth Park this week to see if they were up to their usual standard. They're the only place I've ever come across which allows you to pick and choose among the many varieties of seed potatoes on offer. None of these pre-packed three kilo nets, you can have as many or as few of each variety as you like, a great chance for the novice to try out several new varieties each year until they settle into a set routine like most of the regular gardeners. I never vary my choice, Charlotte for earlies, Desiree for main crop and Pink Fir Apple for a really late main crop. The reason for the activity at this point is that it is probably time to start chitting the seed potatoes for this year's crop. …
