With every household on Teesside using around 600 steel cans a year future generations are been urged not to waste the reusable metal.

Youngsters at Bankfields Primary School in Eston have teamed up with Corus, the UK's largest steel recycler, to learn how recycling steel protects the environment and how easy it is to do thanks to kerb collections and can banks.

Each year group was asked to design a poster promoting any aspect of environmental awareness.

The winning designs are now being made into actual posters to be displayed in Corus workshops.

It is hoped the competition will encourage families to recycle more as well as introducing Corus employees of the future to its important recycling work.

Bob Lambert, manufacturing workshop engineer at Corus, was impressed at how environmentally aware the children already were.

Headteacher Sally Hirst said there was a huge number of entries which showed how seriously the pupils regarded the topic. …
