Terry Maynard is looking forward to a full season of rallycross action - 13 years after he retired!

And this year the garden centre boss from Great Broughton has some company too, for son Neil is also racing.

The pair made their first appearance of the year in Sunday's Rallycross Open Championship curtain-raiser at Croft, and both plan to contest the whole series, which has now received MSA championship status.

Dad Terry won several Croft titles in his prime and was BRDA national supercar champion in 1993.

Now he's back for more, having built up a wonderful-sounding Triumph TR8 and is competing in the revivals category.

"I retired in 1994 because I fell," explained Terry who once raced what was believed to be the fastest Sierra in Britain, powered by a Formula 5000 engine. "I'm okay now though - I just keep taking the pills.

"I've never missed an event at Croft as a spectator and, of course, that's fatal isn't it?

"So when I heard they were going to run a revivals class for historic cars I thought I'd give it a go.

"The TR8 was a write-off when I bought it - the passenger side was non-existent.

"But I spent three months building it up and now I'm looking forward to doing the full championship. It's good fun to drive!"

A morning downpour left conditions tricky for Sunday's meeting although the track started to dry out through the day.

It was only the second meeting of Terry's comeback and he finished fifth in the revivals A final.

"I chose the wrong tyres," he admitted. "I put slicks on the back for the final but the track hadn't dried out as much as I'd thought."

Dean Jones (Escort) took the honours, ahead of Glen Guthrie (VW Golf) and Mick Welsh (Subaru Imprezza).

Son Neil is in his third year of rallycross, although this will be his first full season. …
