Country dwellers last night won their battle against plans to stage military-style paintball games near a leading Northumberland beauty spot.

Councillors rejected a bid to use Milestone Wood near Bolam Lake Country Park for up to three paintball combat sessions a week.

Members of Castle Morpeth Borough Council Planning Committee rejected the advice of their officers and refused permission ( saying the scheme would be an accident waiting to happen.

Fourteen local people and Belsay Parish Council objected to the application by LMS Paintball of Cramlington.

They say paintballing would cause a serious risk to motorists, motorcyclists and horse riders using the road past the woodland.

Despite last night's decision the operators can continue to stage paintball games in Milestone Wood for 28 days a year under permitted development rights.

Coun Ernie Coe told he committee: "This is completely the wrong site and I would could not have this on my conscience because there will be accidents. …
