Schools in Germany are looking for pupil-exchange partners after their 33-year ties with a Teesside school had to be cut.

A pupil exchange has been running between Rye Hills School, Redcar, and schools in Bacharach and Oberwesel since 1974. But Rye Hills had to end the partnership last year as it was phasing out German and new Government guidelines for school trips meant it was becoming too expensive.

Thomas Voigtlender, the German teacher who set up the exchange with Alan Littlefair, now hopes to build a friendship with another school on Teesside.

Hamish Joyce, headteacher at Rye Hills, said: "The person who arranged the exchange retired last summer.

"We used to teach French and German but now we are teaching French and Spanish and the only students learning German are in key stage 4. Within 18 months we will only be teaching French and Spanish. The introduction of Spanish is proving highly successful at the moment in terms of engaging children. …
