Apartment Complex on Brief Lockdown; Police Serving a Warrant Ended Up in a Standoff with the Suspect

Article excerpt

The serving of an arrest warrant for kidnapping charges turned into a full-scale lockdown and standoff at a Jacksonville apartment complex Wednesday.

Officers tried to serve the warrant on Cedric Allen, 23, about 4 p.m. at the Brentwood Lake Apartments off Golfair Boulevard, Lt. Benny Reagor said. Allen refused to come out and threatened to harm himself, Reagor said. He did not have a hostage.

Dozens of patrol cars, SWAT and K-9 units arrived for assistance and evacuated some of the apartments. Several people coming home also had to be kept out for about two hours.

Negotiators talked him out of the home peacefully after about 2 1/2 hours, Reagor said. Officers did not find a weapon.

Allen's fiancee, Sadie Youmans, 22, said the large police presence made her concerned that Allen was in danger.

"There really wasn't a need for all of this," she said. "It was completely unnecessary to have all these officers out here."
