A battle over plans to sell off a public park intensified last night after a North MP unearthed an email showing his local council could have applied for Lottery cash to maintain it.

Derwentside Council intends to sell part of View Lane Park in Stanley, County Durham, for accommodation for people with autism.

But Durham North MP Kevan Jones ( who opposes the move ( claims the authority was wrong to say it could not have won Lottery funding.

Council leader Alex Watson said earlier this month the authority had been advised by Heritage Lottery Fund officials it would not be successful with a bid.

But an email obtained by Mr Jones from the HLF to the council said: "HLF is currently over subscribed, but there is an option of you taking advantage of a joint parks programme with the Big Lottery Fund and ourselves."

Mr Jones said: "It is scandalous that Coun Watson can repeatedly claim that he and his officers tried to obtain Lottery funding, when it is quite clear that they did nothing of the sort. …
