Industry leaders leapt to the defence of a tourism agency yesterday over claims it does not give hoteliers value for money.

They insisted Northumberland Tourism is attracting visitors to the county, despite criticism from a new group of hotel and guest house owners.

The 60-strong Welcome Northumberland group has been formed amid dissatisfaction at the cost and benefits of advertising through Northumberland Tourism. But other business leaders said it is too soon to bad-mouth the company, which launched last April with backing from councils and regional development agency One NorthEast.

Last night Marilyn Framrose, chairman of the Hadrian's Wall Northumberland Network, said: "How can you criticise new organisations? They need time to settle in, but Northumberland Tourism has certainly been very helpful, supportive and very approachable."

Haltwhistle and District Tourism Association chairman Valerie Gibson added: "These are very early days, but we are all very pleased with the progress to date."

And Alnwick Castle retail manager Moira Ging said: "Although it is still in its early stages of development, we are looking forward to forging strong links with Northumberland Tourism. …
