Teesside cricket star Liam Plunkett expressed his deep sorrow after appearing at court to plead guilty to drink-driving.

England bowling hero Plunkett said he was "deeply sorry" for his reckless actions which saw him drink around six pints of beer and then crash his car at traffic lights in Yarm last October.

Plunkett, 21, received a pounds 2,000 fine with pounds 50 costs and was banned from driving for 20 months at Teesside Magistrates' Court yesterday, for driving while twice over the legal limit.

It recorded 172mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood - more than twice the legal limit.

Plunkett, a former Nunthorpe School pupil, was bailed by police until he returned from international duty in Australia.

He returned to England on February 12 and was charged with drink-driving two days later.

Mr Platts said Plunkett had let down his coaches at Durham County Cricket Club, his England coaches and his team-mates. …
