Real in Crisis as Buck Stops with Mourinho

JOSE MOURINHO has given assurances to the Chelsea board that he has not held talks with other clubs.

The head coach was forced to clarify his position after being linked with jobs at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

However, rumours suggesting the Portuguese will defect to the Bernabeu this summer are set to persist after a radio station in the Spanish capital last night reported that current Real coach, Fabio Capello was to quit. Real have denied the story, but should those reports be substantiated, Mourinho will become the Madrid club's No 1 target.

His position at Stamford Bridge is uncertain even though he has a contract until 2010 after a fallout with owner Roman Abramovich.

The club have so far failed to renew the contracts of Mourinho's coaching staff and chief executive Peter Kenyon said yesterday they review contracts at the end of the season.

It is widely expected that the Portuguese will leave Chelsea in the summer after complaining of a lack of support for his management style and scope. …
