The new Shields Ferry, Spirit of the Tyne, will be heading up the river tomorrow to pass under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge for the first time.

The pounds 1.9m ferry, which is to be officially named by the Princess Royal at a ceremony on March 1, is being taken as far as the Tyne's landmark bridges as part of the crew's routine programme of training on board the new vessel.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be opened at 10am tomorrow to allow Spirit of the Tyne to pass underneath before the vessel turns around and heads back down river to its berth at South Shields ferry landing.

Graffiti removal

The council offers a free graffiti removal service to households and businesses in South Tyneside, which can be gained through one phone call to its contact centre on (0191) 427-7000.

One firm to benefit from the free service is John Carey Motor Services, in William Street, South Shields, which has had graffiti removed from garages and a wall repainted. …
