Nissan believes its new Qashqai model, which goes on sale from March 1, will prove a catalyst for change.

Named after a desert-dwelling nomadic tribe living near the Zagros mountains in south western Iran, Qashqai (pronounced Kash-Kai) is the same size as a Ford Focus yet smaller than a typical compact sports utility vehicle.

This is the crossover vehicle that is replacing both the Almera and Primera models and is built at Nissan's Sunderland factory.

It comes with a choice of two and four-wheel drive and four engines, two diesel and two petrol. The engine range starts with a 1.6-litre 115PS petrol and 1.5 dCi diesel developing 106PS. A pair of petrol and diesel two-litre engines develop 140PS and 150PS.

Five and six-speed manual transmissions, six-speed automatic and an advanced CVT gearbox are available.

The Qashqai combines the best attributes of an SUV ( a high driving position and solid build ( with those of a conventional hatchback ( great driving dynamics, good fuel economy and low insurance ratings. …
