Taylor's Left to Rue What Could Have Been

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor was left to rue his goal that got away in last night's UEFA Cup victory over Zulte-Waregem at St James' Park, (writes Alan Oliver).

The central defender saw his fourth-minute header cleared off the line by defender Sebastian Siani as United looked lively early on.

But as things turned out they had to wait for over an hour before Oba Martins finally grabbed the only goal of the game.

Taylor already has three goals to his name this season, but he has not scored since the FA Cup draw with Birmingham City at St Andrews at the beginning of the year, and is convinced the floodgates would have opened had his effort gone in.

The England Under-21 international said: "I felt I got a good connection on the ball and I was devastated that there was someone on the line.

"It was one of those things ( sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. It was a good chance, and next time I'll try to get a bit higher. …
