Relief as Connor Allowed to Stay

Neighbours of obese eight-year-old Connor McCreaddie say they are pleased social services have allowed him to stay with his mother.

Connor, eight, who weighs 14 stone, appeared on the Tonight with Trevor McDonald programme on Monday night and has been under the intense glare of the national media ever since.

Yesterday Connor, who is thought to weigh three times more than an average eight-year-old, together with his mother Nicola McKeown, 35, and his grandmother Barbara Blake, were summoned to a child protection conference over his future.

Connor, of Strawberry Gardens, Wallsend, could have been placed on the child protection register along with victims of physical and sexual abuse, or on the less serious children in need register.

But North Tyneside council released a statement saying that he would be allowed to stay with his mother.

A statement issued on behalf of the Local Safeguarding Children Board said: "We have had a useful discussion today during which all agencies and the family confirmed the priority in this matter is the eight-year-old boy.

"The Local Safeguarding Children Board was able to confirm that its hope and ambition is to enable this child to remain with his family.

"In order to move this matter forward we have made a formal agreement with the family to safeguard and promote the child's welfare."

As the family returned home yesterday, at around 6.30pm, they were surrounded by flashing cameras, television crews and reporters from across the country but declined to comment on the meeting's outcome or what had been said.

Laura Brierly, 24, a full-time mum with one daughter Chenise, two, said she has lived on the street for her entire life and says she is pleased Connor is staying with his mum.
