Team Northumbria completed a Women's National League double over Solent Suns ( but, as in the first clash in Southampton two weeks ago, the result was agonisingly close.

Deirdre Hayes' side won 85-84 on the South Coast ( and in Saturday's return on Tyneside they had to wait for the buzzer to sound and Joann Overstreet's shot to drop through the net to secure an 82-80 victory.

Solent quickly established a 13-point lead and it looked like it was going to be a long day for the home side.

By the end of the first quarter Northumbria trailed 24-13 and, while the visitors seemed to be finding the basket easily, Northumbria struggled to see their shots fall.

Although that gap closed to eight at the half, Northumbria still were struggling offensively, while their counterparts were shooting 50%.

In the third quarter the hosts closed to within four, courtesy of free throws from England under-18 player Dominique Allen, before Solent again increased their lead to 60-51 going into the final quarter. …
