On March 1 1997, managing director Peter Durham QPM formally opened the doors of St James Security Ltd at their offices in Allison Court, MetroCentre, to commence trading in the manned guarding industry.

Many of the national companies said it wouldn't last, but here we are 10 years later, celebrating a truly successful business enterprise. From very humble beginnings, with literally no business in our portfolio, we continue to this day, operating out of our head office in Allison Court. Within 18 months we became an ISO 9002 accredited company, and within two years were a principal member of the British Security Industry Association.

It was our intention to become the very best security company within the North of England, but at the two-year mark our business opportunities took us to Scotland where we opened a regional office in East Kilbride, followed very shortly thereafter with a London office which is now in Uxbridge.

Peter Durham states that from day one, our continuous aim was to target and represent a blue-chip client base needing high-quality, fully screened, security personnel that would represent their quality business. That is exactly what we have achieved, with a blue-chip client base and publicly listed companies spread throughout our entire portfolio.

In the 10 years our business has operated the security industry has massively changed. Public perception of security personnel is now much more enhanced, particularly since the terrorist attack of 9/11.

The recent creation of the Security Industry Authority by the Government has brought the industry to a new dawn. A compulsory level of training, criminal record checks and intense background screening gives buyers of security services the supreme confidence to place their business with us.

As part of the Security Industry Authority's implementation of standards, we were one of the very first companies nationally to be awarded the highest accreditation of Approved Contractor Status. The ACS status is in fact a charter mark which gives a clear indication to buyers that our company has been meticulously inspected, and meets the highest possible standards in our business operation, business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and a whole raft of other measurement factors. …
