A letter sent by Wardle to the Chronicle pretends he is a junkie burglar who is a stranger to the victim.

In it he asks us to print it or pass it on to the authorities, saying he confesses to the crime and wants to apologise.

Mainly lies to cover his tracks, he does let slip some elements in the way the brutal attack was carried out.

After describing himself as a low-level opportunist thief the letter said: "I'm the guilty one, I'm the scum who left that lass choking to death . . .

"I was walking down the back alleys checking all the back gates, looking for anything that I could steal.

"Just enough to make me happy and if the lass had given me the pounds 20 this wouldn't of happened and all them lives would be okay now not ruined.

"When I got to the last house the gate was open. …
