* TOM FOULKES, director general of the Institution of Civil Engineers, was about to board the Eurostar for Paris last November when he was arrested and detained for carrying a knife - measuring 50mm, it was part of a credit card-sized tool kit. He was taken to Tottenham Court Road police station and held for five hours before being formally cautioned for carrying an offensive weapon. He has now received a letter of apology from London Transport Police Chief Constable Ian Johnston, a cheque for [pounds sterling]15 to cover his taxi fares and the return of the "blade".

No mention of compensation for the loss of his time. But Foulkes is unperturbed: he's invited Johnston to dinner to thank him for having the courage to correct the error. Hmmm. City Spy can't help thinking that unless the meal is in a burger joint, one man's generosity is much greater than the other's.

* OH DEAR. The person being touted as a likely successor to Jack Lemley as chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority was John Armitt, chief executive of Network Rail.

Then the Cumbrian derailment happened... * IT was never going to fly. Bmi's decision last year to scrap free booze and food on its aircraft, even for those in business class, has been U-turned. In a "new initiative", the former British Midland has added another level to its Diamond Club that - surprise, surprise - allows free booze and food for "our most important customers, our frequent flyers who often travel with us business".
