Signal failure hits mainline services

Commuters were hit by travel chaos today when a signal failure halted train services

All services on the East Coast mainline were suspended for over an hour after a loss of signaling power was reported at Darlington just after 7am, leaving passengers stranded.

A limited service was able to resume but only with the help of hand signals.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "There was a complete loss of signaling power at Darlington at 7.11am.

"Our engineers located the problem but there were no trains travelling north or south for over an hour.

"Some trains were cancelled but others were able to start running again with the help of hand signaling, but only very slowly.

"We would like to apologise to all passengers who suffered delays while the repairs were carried out."

The cause of the loss of power is now under investigation.

The spokesman added: "The most common cause of a loss of power is the signal cable being cut. …
