Residents were today urged to have patience with roadworks which they say are causing traffic chaos.

Redcar and Cleveland Council is carrying out pounds 85,000 junction improvement works, which involves installing a new traffic signal system, at the junction of Kirkleatham Lane and Trunk Road. Work is due to finish in April.

Residents living near to the junction say they are fed up with traffic tailbacks. They also claim traffic queues are visible while work is "non-existent".

But the council stresses work has deliberately avoided rush-hour periods, with measures also in place to prevent motorists taking a short cut through a residential street.

Gordon Rennie, of Corporation Road, said: "For weeks, roadworks have caused serious queues at the junction."

He said on March 2 he witnessed a queue stretching from the corner of the Trunk Road to British Steel, with one lane closed.
